STANLEY R. HILL, SR.
Mohawk (1921-2003)
Stanley Hill discovered his artistic talents when he retired in 1975 from a career as a steelworker. He was the preeminent antler carver until his death in 2003. He drew his inspiration from his Haudenosaunee culture. Stan focused on Iroquois clan animals, particularly beavers, turtles and bears, and on eagles, the guardians of the Tree of Peace. As a sculptor, he saw a link between himself and his forefathers who carved handsome combs and figures. During his lifetime he earned many awards and his work is in numerous Museum and private collections.
